There is a new head of legal and technical at global broking giant Aon – with the company turning to a law veteran to head up its team.
Edward Smerdon is joining Aon having previously been a partner at Reynolds Porter Chamberlain LLP and a managing partner at Sedgwick Detert Moran & Arnold LLP in London. He held leadership positions at both firms and is considered a specialist in complex coverage – focusing primarily on financial lines insurance, including directors & officers, as well as professional and employment practice liabilities.
“After 27 years in private legal practice, with a focus on insurance, I am delighted to make the transition to a dynamic and forward-thinking player like Aon,” he said. “I look forward to the challenges of the market.”
Smerdon has worked on a host of complex claim negotiations in the past, leading product development for many industry verticals. He is also a regular on industry panels, addressing key issues facing the sector.
“Ed’s appointment reflects our ongoing investment in high-quality professionals whose technical capabilities and insights are enabling us to deliver differentiated capabilities to our global clients,” said Tracy-Lee Kus, head of financial and professional services within Aon’s Global Broking Centre. “We are excited to have him on board.”
